On the winning side
Launched in 2003, North Swindon has its very own football club for kids: FC Abbey Meads. The growing club has four teams – an under 13s, under 11s, under 10 ‘A’ and under 10 ‘B’ – playing in the North Wiltshire leagues. At the time of writing and midway through the season, each team was performing admirably against tough competition. “Our teams are playing very well,” said Tanya Parkinson, Club Secretary. “They play in challenging leagues and we’re proud of their performances.”
The teams currently train at Abbey Meads Primary School with home games battled out at St Lukes school in Penhill and Lydiard Park. As Tanya explained, the club is always on the lookout for fresh new talent: “There’s no waiting list to join and we’re pleased to give every child a trial. We’re also planning to run a 7-a-side team from September 2007, so there will be extra places to fill.”
For Tanya, it’s the club’s community approach that lifts them above the competition. “The club has a family atmosphere,” she smiled. “We’ve had lots of positive feedback from parents saying how much their children enjoy being part of the club. From organising the matches to playing the games, this friendly, fun approach is at the heart of everything we do.”
Since launch, the North Swindon Development Company (NSDC) has sponsored the club, helping pay for strips and pitch-side banners. "We’ve been thrilled with Priory Vale’s sponsorship," she said. "Without their support, we simply wouldn't exist. They're a lifeline."
With a new chairman (Alan Peare) in place and a new team on the way, the future’s looking bright for the club. “We’re always looking for different ways to take the club to the next stage,” concluded Tanya. “From helping run the teams to sponsoring the club, if anyone would like to support FC Abbey Meads, we’d love to hear from you.” To find out more, call Tanya on 01793 705105. |
