These
include spaces for creative learning, an
independent living area to help young adults
prepare for life in the community, plus
spaces for music, art, technology, food
preparation and sensory experiences. Pupils
also enjoy access to a wealth of learning
technologies and health services at the
nearby therapy centre (Multi-Agency Unit).
In addition, the school's design considers
the students' security needs, including
sensitive use of borders, fencing and security
systems.
As
a special school that once resided at a
small building in Penhill, Mary Bishop couldn't
be happier with Uplands' relocation to Priory
Vale. "We knew it would be a good move
but we didn't know just how wonderful it
would be," she said. "The new
school is so spacious, yet we've retained
our welcoming feel." Uplands enjoys
easy access to the hydrotherapy pool and
Multi Agency Unit, while independent living
accommodation is available for over sixteens.
"Our pupils here have made tremendous
progress, exceeding all our expectations,"
confirmed Mary.
Mary also believes Upland's presence in
Priory Vale affords excellent learning opportunities:
"Our students have walked to Asda,
learned to use the bus services, and are
finding out more about the community."
It's a trend Mary is keen to encourage.
"Every Thursday morning at 10.30am,
our students convert the common room into
a coffee shop, and when the sun's shining
they put out tables and chairs. It would
be great if local people would pop along
for an hour or so. Just come to the school's
entrance and we'll show you round. A warm
welcome awaits." |
